Nothingness

“I’ve spent my life reading, yawning, tinkling the bell of my own little problems, never managing to make a decision – only to find that I have decided, that I chose this war & this defeat, that today has been waiting for me since the beginning of time. Everything’s got to be done over again, & yet, there’s nothing that can be done. The two thoughts interpenetrated, cancelled one another out. Only the unruffled surface of Nothingness remained.”

Jean-Paul Sartre

(Iron in the Soul)

I read this paragraph two days ago, but I couldn’t help reading it again & again. Although I haven’t been to that kind of war & as such I didn't have any problem in making decisions but I can relate to it, because most of us face defeat in some form or the other & fate decides important things for us whether we like it or not.

Sometimes we’re left with nothing; sometimes we wait for nothing. Nothingness seems to be the only factor that is real enough. You don’t even have the option to blot out anything & maybe you don’t need it. You are left with nothing & everything else becomes inconsequential.

I think literature is one of the best things that has happened to me. But cats & dogs are even better than literature. And yeah there is no harm in reading Iron in the soul! It may recharge your brain cells...
