In June, Carmen spoke about a Canadian-owned mine at a public meeting in Guatemala. But before and after the meeting, she received messages that said, "Your shouldn't defend human rights, or you'll be killed." Three weeks later, one of her colleagues, Deodora, was shot in the eye. She was seriously wounded, but survived.
